Anita Blake1- Guilty Pleasures |
|
2005.12.15. 18:42 |
This is the first of the Anita Blake series, hence the number one on the spine. I seem to recall that when I read this I thought that maybe there was a story that was meant to go before it, perhaps it was a short story or maybe it is something that is getting saved for a couple of hundred page flashback later on, not sure what the true state of affairs is.
Unfortunately I started reading this series quite some time prior to starting Ex-Libris so I am trying to recall what happened in the first book I read in a series that I have currently read the first nine parts of. At the time of writing this review I am awaiting the orbit Release of the tenth Anita Blake novel. This means the reviews are going to be somewhat vague but at least that will leave plenty of reason to read the books
Tamara requested that I review this entire series, since I am reading a single novel version of the Lord of the Rings at the point in time that I am writing this, I have a fair bit of time before my next review will be written in the last book read section, do it is something to keep me busy.
In this novel we meet several of the recurring characters, including of course Anita who the series is named after. We also meet the character who is Anita's main rival in the coolness stakes, Edward, a bounty hunter who has stopped hunting people because they are two easy and has moved onto vampires and were-creatures.
I think that Edward could almost get his own spin off series were this a TV show, much in the way that Angel spun off from Buffy.
The novel takes its name from a venue, like many of the Anita novels, it is the name of a strip club run by a master vampire called Jean Claude who is also one of the main characters in the series. Anita reluctantly goes to said strip club with a couple of friends for a Hen's night, this is helpful as we get an insight into vampire mind powers and peoples varying levels of resistance to them.
Anita ends up working for the current master of the city to solve a case involving a serial killer who hunts vampires, the novel takes us through the investigation and gathering of clues all the while educating us about the reality it is set in.
Edward introduces Anita to a very cool scientific and mostly silent way to kill vampires while they sleep, involving silver nitrate and a syringe, and you get the feeling that he is going to introduce Anita to some very creative ways to kill.
The first novel really is an introduction more than anything to a lot of the concepts and some of the main characters, each novel gets longer than the previous one, number nine is almost twice as thick as number one .
